Gola Island 2025

This year’s Gola Island trip will go down in Belfast Climbing Club history-not just for the incredible climbs, but for the record-breaking heat. With temperatures hitting 29°C on Saturday, it was officially our hottest Gola trip to date. Of course, no adventure is complete without a challenge: a damaged water line between the mainland and the island meant we had to get a little creative with our hydration strategies.

Most of the club arrived Friday morning, with a few eager members camping nearby the night before. Spirits were high, tents went up fast, and before long we were all off to the crags, buzzing with anticipation.

Climbing Highlights

Daniel had a big weekend, climbing Gorgonzola (E2) with Will—a greasy epic that ended with a spooky, committing runout. He also led his first E1, Born Again Climber.

Louisa had a blast climbing Snow Desert (HS) with Gemma, who took on the lead and handled a punchy crux just a couple of metres off the ground. Louisa also notched her second and third leads; massive thanks to Alan for the anchor support and encouragement!

Vicky enjoyed Flake Out, a two-star VS with stunning views, and also led Cois Farraige, a crackin’ three-star HVS that certainly wasn’t easy on the hands.

The heat must’ve been affecting Richard—he didn’t place a single Tricam all weekend, a rare sight indeed.

After plenty of encouragement from fellow climbers, Ashley led Run of the Arrow(VS), although the sea claimed a bit of her gear in the process!

Beyond the Crags

With temperatures as high as they were, the club quickly morphed into a hybrid climbing/swimming/sailing/kayaking club. Kyle took to the sea in a kayak, exploring the dramatic coastline and hidden sea caves. Paul brought out his dart and ventured a little farther afield.

Even some of the usual non-swimmers found themselves cooling off in the Atlantic after a long day of climbing!

Until Next Time

Between the climbs, the sea, and the soaring temperatures, Gola 2025 delivered an unforgettable mix of adventure and community. As always, huge thanks to everyone who helped organise, supported newer climbers, or just brought the good vibes. Here’s to many more weekends like it!
